With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, the Jefferson Territory was created out of what is now the State of California and the State of Oregon. In the 1850's, the State of Jefferson petitioned the US government for Statehood but the efforts resulted in the creation of the State of Oregon. Now stuck in between California and Oregon, those States continued efforts to recognize the region as an additional State. California attempted to organize the region as the State of Shasta and Oregon attempted to organize the region as the State of Klamath, but neither efforts were successful. The region eventually seceded from both States and in 1941 elected it's own provisional governor. Unfortunately, at the same time, the U.S. entered into the second World War and the momentum for official Statehood was lost. BACK |
